Animal Shelter Having Fundraiser in Moscow, Idaho, This Week

By Nicole Hindberg on February 21, 2019

The Humane Society of the Palouse is a no-kill animal shelter in Moscow. The shelter was founded in 1978 and has been bringing families together with their pets ever since through hundreds of adoptions over the years. Their mission is to ensure animals are adopted by caring owners, promote spaying and neutering, promote responsible pet ownership and minimize euthanasia as much as possible.

Before this shelter opened, there was one other shelter in Moscow, but it was a kill shelter. In 1978, the shelter owners founded this shelter in order to stop that process. Eventually, the other shelter closed down. Currently, the Humane Society of the Palouse is the only animal shelter in Moscow.

Many residents of Moscow recognize the work that the Humane Society does in the area. Today, more and more people are adopting from shelters rather than buying from pet stores or puppy mills. Even though more people are doing this, it is not always enough because shelters are overcrowded. Some shelters euthanize animals in order to make room for new ones because of the lack of help. The Humane Society made it their mission to become a no-kill shelter in response to that kill shelter that was in Moscow in the 70s.

Executive Director Tara Wilmer said, “We are always looking for volunteers in order to help keep the animals healthy, active and happy. We also have various other fundraiser opportunities throughout the year. Applications for volunteer positions are required.”

Even though the Humane Society has been successful, they still need help in many ways. They have held various fundraisers over the years in order for them to continue what they are doing. This week, the Humane Society is going to have another one.

On Thursday, February 21, from 5-6:30 p.m., in the Moscow Chamber of Commerce, the Humane Society will be having a fundraiser as well as teaching attendants about the organization.

The Humane Society offers various programs including a volunteer program where community members can walk and feed the shelter animals while the animals are in the process of being adopted. They also offer spay and neuter assistance programs, micro-chipping services, a pet food pantry, a foster program, and adoption. The shelter not only offers cat and dog adoption but birds and other small animals as well.

All animals are spayed or neutered, up to date on all yearly vaccines and are micro-chipped for the convenience of future owners.

The Humane Society is open Monday through Saturday from 1-6 p.m.
